La genesi di questo progetto è un po' datata e ha un che di surreale.
Tempo addietro mi trovai infatti a cena con un caro amico, grande esperto di elettroacustica e mentre parlavamo della mia passione per le riprese dal vivo di cori ed ensemble nacque l'idea di questo microfono, tanto originale quanto in fondo semplice. Il primo bozzetto lo realizzammo sulla tovaglia di carta della trattoria, secondo la migliore tradizione dell'improvvisazione....
La meccanica
Per quanto ci si sforzi a sviluppare una grande elettronica, non grandi risultati sono ottenibili se il punto di partenza, cioè la tecnica di ripresa, non è ottimale. Oggigiorno sono disponibili buone capsule microfoniche sia dinamiche sia a condensatore a prezzi molto contenuti. Quello che manca è un posizionamento tale da permettere una corretta ricostruzione della scena sonora di fronte a noi.
Ecco, dunque, che il primo passo è proprio la progettazione di questa parte, che gioca un ruolo fondamentale nel risultato finale.
Nella figura sottostante potete vedere il disegno costruttivo del corpo principale.
In sostanza è un semielissoide di rotazione, una specie di palla da rugby tagliata a metà lungo l'asse maggiore. Il corpo è realizzato per tornitura, in legno di media durezza, quale ad esempio il faggio.
I due microfoni sono alloggiati nel corpo principale, lungo l'asse mediano a circa 58mm dai “vertici” del corpo.
Detta struttura è lavorata internamente per alloggiare l'elettronica ed accoppiata ad una flangia o “tappo posteriore” in cui trovano sede le batterie ricaricabili ed il connettore generale.

I trasduttori
Ruolo essenziale ovviamente giocano i 2 trasduttori, cioè le capsule microfoniche. Una buona soluzione in quanto a costi, prestazioni e riproducibilità è rappresentata dal modello MD-110 della Monacor. E' una capsula dinamica, con una estesa risposta in frequenza ed una buona sensibilità, di ben 2mv/Pa @ 1kHz.
Per il loro montaggio nel corpo ligneo, occorre una sede circolare di circa 28mm di diametro. La centratura e relativa sospensione del corpo microfonico è ottenuta sia per mezzo del proprio accessorio in gomma morbida che ne guida la parte posteriore, sia con “l'abbraccio” di due Oring in Viton ® da 27x1,5mm sulla parte frontale. L'immagine a fianco mostra uno dei microfoni, cablato e pronto ad essere inserito e bloccato per interferenza nel corpo principale.

Se alcuni decenni addietro progettare un buon preamplificatore microfonico era affare per esperti di elettronica e poteva richiedere un circuito complesso, ingombrante e l'impiego di componenti selezionati, oggi l'integrazione e lo sviluppo di prodotti specifici ha semplificato in maniera sconvolgente l'attività. Uno dei componenti attualmente più consigliabili è l'SSM2019 della Analog Device. Vediamo i suoi punti di forza:

Interessante vero? Vediamo lo schema suggerito ed impiegato nella mia realizzazione:

La capsula alimenta l'amplificatore in pseudo-differenziale per minimizzare la raccolta di rumore elettrico dall'ambiente circostante. I sottili cavi di collegamento dal microfono all'amplificatore sono twistati (intrecciati). Il guadagno come anticipato è definito dalla sola R3 secondo la seguente formula:

L'amplificatore così dimensionato eleva il segnale microfonico ad un livello adeguato, capace quindi di lunghi percorsi al riparo da interferenze.
Con i valori indicati, si ottiene una uscita di circa -10dBV (livello 0dB per le linee audio consumer) con circa 100dB di livello sonoro. C1 e R5 realizzano una moderata equalizzazione per compensare la caduta di risposta delle capsule dinamiche impiegate.
L'alimentazione
La sezione di alimentazione del microfono è un poco particolare: scopriamo perché.
I due preamplificatori sono alimentati da una tensione duale di circa +/-9V generata da un paio di batterie. Se l'uso è veramente occasionale si può pensare di impiegare degli accumulatori classici, da sostituire ogni volta, aprendo il microfono. Se l'impiego è un po' più frequente è opportuno piuttosto installare una coppia di batterie ricaricabili NiMh da 8,4V.
Il massimo della convenienza d'utilizzo sarebbe raggiunta quando si avesse anche:
possibilità di ricaricare le batterie senza doverle estrarre dal microfono
impossibilità di dimenticarsi il microfono acceso quando non utilizzato
soluzione “elegante” e facilmente riproducibile
Combinando tutto, si può immaginare di utilizzare in maniera opportuna il connettore pentapolare d'uscita: vediamo come.
Per mantenere un taglio di robustezza e affidabilità del progetto il connettore è appunto un XLR a 5 poli, facilmente reperibile e dal costo contenuto. Cinque contatti però potrebbero non apparire sufficienti a rispondere a tutta la lista dei desideri sopra descritta, invece...
Vediamo lo schema sottostante:
Le batterie sono collegate ad un “modulo alimentatore” che di fatto agisce come un doppio interruttore, alternativamente collegandole o isolandole dai circuiti di preamplificazione.
La chiusura a massa del pin 3 del connettore accende il microfono, che rimane spento quando il contatto è invece aperto.
E' possibile la ricarica delle batterie semplicemente collegandosi sui pin di massa e n°2 e n°4.
La soluzione più efficace è la disponibilità di due semplici cavi di connessione a seconda del momento così costruiti:

Quando nessun cavo è connesso, tutto rimane spento.
La soluzione più immediata per il “modulo alimentazione” sarebbe un piccolo relè a due scambi, ma qui siamo “elettronici o caporali?”
Vediamo allora lo schema a fianco.
Il classico relè meccanico è sostituito da un doppio interruttore elettronico a mosfet. Quando il pin 3 è aperto i due dispositivi sono tenuti in stato di interdizione dalle resistenze di polarizzazione R4 e R5 e il carico è quindi isolato. Chiudendo a massa il pin di controllo, si manda in conduzione il ramo positivo che a sua volta “accende” quello negativo. I diodi zener regolano e limitano le tensioni a cavallo dei pin dei dispositivi.
Per realizzare in maniera compatta questo circuito è molto conveniente impiegare il dispositivo SI4564DY che racchiude al suo interno una coppia di MosFet complementari.
Le misure ed i test
E' sempre molto difficile caratterizzare un microfono senza disporre di un laboratorio specificamente attrezzato. Una delle misure sicuramente fattibili è la valutazione del rumore di fondo e della dinamica ottenibile. Ricordiamo come la capsula microfonica abbia una sensibilità di 2mV/Pa, come dire che l'intero microfono (amplificatore compreso) a 94dB di livello sonoro produce una tensione di 168mV.
Vediamo nella tabella seguente alcune corrispondenze fra le diverse grandezze.

Nel mio esemplare ho misurato un fondo di rumore pari a 100μV in misura pesata A (600μV in lineare). Questo indica una soglia di sensibilità del sistema pari a circa 28dB. L'amplificatore è in grado di erogare circa 5V massimi pari ad un livello sonoro in ingresso di ben 120dB! Considerando il fondo scala di -10dBV (316mV) a 100dB di livello sonoro, la dinamica risulta circa 70dB, adeguata all'applicazione per cui è pensato.
Prove sul campo hanno confermato le buone qualità dell'insieme. La ricostruzione del fronte sonoro è buona con adeguata separazione fra i canali, così come in generale l'equilibrio tonale sembra soddisfacente.
Non mi resta che augurarvi buone sperimentazioni e registrazioni!
